Theme 2: Biodiversity & Ecosystems
Following are some Broad Learning Outcomes and Activities which
relate to all of the five topics listed on the menu, and covered by
this Theme.Learning Outcomes
Students will understand:
- that biodiversity refers to our complex web of life
- that preserving biodiversity is essential to the future of life on our planet
- about ecosystems and how they work.
Learning Activities
Students will:
- examine the complexity of natural systems and the relationships between chemical, physical and biological factors in the environment.
- discover the services that ecosystems and biodiversity provide which help maintain water quality, food sources, human health, our economy and other benefits.
- discover why native vegetation is important and how it is now threatened.
- understand how the different types of ecosystems work, from wetland systems through to estuarine, coastal and oceans.
- discover that particular species of animals and plants can help indicate the health of their ecosystems. They will become familiar with some of these bioindicators and discover how habitats can be monitored.
